Paint Correction vs Polishing
The words get used interchangeably in advertising. They describe different levels of work with different outcomes and different risks.
The terms, defined
| Term | What it means | Permanent? |
|---|---|---|
| Compounding | Aggressive abrasive cut to level deeper defects | Yes — removes clear coat |
| Polishing | Finer abrasive step to refine and restore gloss | Yes — removes a little clear coat |
| Paint correction | The overall process: compound + polish to a defined standard | Yes |
| Glazing | Oils and fillers that mask defects temporarily | No — washes away |
| All-in-one | Light abrasive plus filler and protection in one product | Partly |
How to tell if you got correction or filler
The test is an IPA or panel-wipe solution. A properly corrected panel looks identical after the wipe; a filled panel shows its swirls again immediately. Any detailer confident in their correction will do this wipe in front of you.
The second tell is time. Genuine two-step correction on a mid-size vehicle takes eight to sixteen hours. A three-hour 'correction' was a glaze.
How much clear coat are we talking about?
Factory clear coat is thin, and only part of it can be safely removed over the life of the car. A single moderate correction removes a small fraction — but the budget is finite, which is why repeated annual corrections are a bad plan.
The right sequence is: correct once, then protect so the defects do not return. That is the practical argument for following correction with a coating rather than a wax.

What to ask before booking
- Which defects will be removed, and roughly what percentage?
- Is this one-step or multi-step?
- Will you do a panel wipe to show true results?
- Do you measure paint thickness on older or repainted vehicles?
- What protection goes on afterward?
