Water spots
Water Spot Removal in Charlotte
Not all water spots are the same. Some wipe away with the right chemistry; others have physically etched the clear coat and require polishing.
Three stages of water spotting
| Stage | What it is | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Surface deposit | Dried minerals sitting on the paint | Acidic mineral remover or a dedicated water spot solution |
| Bonded deposit | Minerals adhered into the surface texture | Chemical treatment plus clay or light polish |
| Etching | A physical crater in the clear coat where minerals concentrated | Machine polishing to level the surrounding clear coat |
Why it happens so readily here
Two Charlotte-area patterns dominate. The first is irrigation: lawn sprinklers overspraying a driveway or parking area repeatedly hit the same panels with mineral-rich well or municipal water that then bakes dry.
The second is summer weather. An afternoon thunderstorm wets a vehicle, the sun returns within the hour, and water evaporates off a panel that may be well above ambient temperature. Everything dissolved in that water stays behind, concentrated in the shape of the drop.
Prevention beats correction
- Dry the vehicle after washing rather than letting it air dry
- Redirect sprinkler heads away from driveways and parking pads
- Keep a sealant or coating on the paint — spots sit on the protection layer instead of the clear coat
- Rinse promptly after a storm if the vehicle sat under mineral-heavy runoff from a roof or tree
- Do not attempt to buff dried spots off with a dry towel; that adds swirls to the problem

Glass is often worse than paint
Glass holds mineral etching stubbornly, and spotting on a windshield produces glare at night. Glass polishing with cerium-based compounds can remove light etching, though deep etching in glass may be permanent.
