Headlight Restoration in Charlotte

Yellowed lenses cut light output substantially. Restoration is one of the highest-value details available — it improves both appearance and night driving safety.

Why headlights yellow

Modern lenses are polycarbonate with a factory UV-protective coating. That coating degrades under sun exposure, and once it fails the plastic underneath oxidizes rapidly — yellowing, then hazing, then developing a crazed texture.

Vehicles parked facing south or west outdoors in the Charlotte sun degrade fastest. It is common to see one lens noticeably worse than the other purely because of how the vehicle habitually parks.

The process, and why the last step decides longevity

Polishing alone looks great for a couple of months and then yellows again faster than before, because the remaining factory protection was just sanded away. The UV sealing step is what makes restoration last one to three years.

  1. 1Mask surrounding paint and trim thoroughly
  2. 2Wet sand through progressive grits to remove the failed coating and oxidized layer
  3. 3Machine polish to restore optical clarity
  4. 4Apply a new UV-protective coating or sealant

When replacement is the better answer

  • Internal condensation or moisture inside the housing — restoration only treats the outside
  • Cracked lenses or damaged mounting tabs
  • Internal reflector degradation, where the silvering inside has burned or peeled
  • Deeply crazed lenses that would need excessive material removal
