Car Scratch Removal in Charlotte
Whether a scratch can be removed comes down to one question: how deep does it go? We assess before promising anything.
The fingernail test
Run a fingernail lightly across the scratch. If it glides over without catching, the defect is inside the clear coat and is a strong candidate for full removal by polishing. If it catches, the scratch has reached the base coat or primer and cannot be polished out — the material simply is not there to level.
Deeper scratches can still be improved: the edges can be softened so the defect stops catching light, and touch-up filling can reduce visibility considerably. Full repair means paint work, which is body shop territory, and we will tell you when that is the honest answer.
Types we see most often
- Automatic car wash marring — dense, uniform fine scratching across horizontal panels; see swirl mark removal
- Parking lot door scuffs — often paint transfer sitting on top of your clear coat, which removes surprisingly easily
- Key and branch scratches — usually deep and linear; improvement rather than removal
- Bumper scuffs from concrete curbs and parking blocks, common in tight uptown decks
- Loading scratches on truck tailgates and SUV bumper tops from cargo
Paint transfer is not always a scratch
When another vehicle, a garage door edge or a shopping cart contacts your panel, the mark left behind is frequently that object's paint or plastic deposited on your surface. It looks alarming and often removes almost completely with a light polish.
Before assuming the worst, have it assessed. This is one of the more satisfying quick wins in detailing.
