Summer UV Car Care in the Carolinas

From June to September, sunlight is the most destructive thing acting on your vehicle — more than rain, more than road grime.

Heat, not just light

A dark car parked in a Charlotte lot on a 93°F day reaches surface temperatures well above 140°F, and cabin air well above that. Heat accelerates every chemical process: wax melts, plasticizers leave the dash, adhesives soften, and any contaminant sitting on paint etches faster.

It also constrains detailing itself. Product applied to a hot panel flashes before it can work, which is why we schedule exterior work early or in shade in midsummer.

Practical summer routine

  1. 1Park in shade or a garage whenever the option exists
  2. 2Use a windshield sunshade — it is the cheapest interior protection available
  3. 3Rinse off sprinkler overspray the same day before minerals etch
  4. 4Wash in the early morning or evening, never on a hot panel
  5. 5Reapply protection mid-season if you are using wax or sealant
  6. 6Apply UV protectant to dash, door tops and leather every few months

Once damage is done

Faded clear coat can be polished back if the coat is intact; once it is failing and peeling, only repainting fixes it. Chalky single-stage paint responds well to oxidation removal, and hazed headlights are restorable — see headlight restoration.

Cracked dashboards and hardened leather are not restorable, which is why prevention here is unusually worth the effort.
