Road Brine and Winter Car Care in NC
Charlotte does not get northern winters, but NCDOT brines the interstates before every threatened storm — and brine is more corrosive per application than rock salt.
Why brine is worse than salt
Liquid salt brine is sprayed as a film and sticks to surfaces rather than bouncing off. It stays wet longer, penetrates seams and crevices, and keeps working on metal well after the roads dry. A single I-77 or I-485 commute during a brine event coats the entire underside of a vehicle.
Because Charlotte winters are mild and wet, that film often stays damp for days, which is exactly the condition corrosion needs.
What gets attacked first
- Brake components, subframes and exhaust hangers
- Wheel well liners and the seams behind them
- Rocker panel seams and the lower edges of doors
- Aluminum trim and chrome, which pits rather than rusts
- Bare metal at existing stone chips on the hood and front bumper
The routine that prevents it
- 1Wash within 48 hours of driving on treated roads, even if the car looks clean
- 2Prioritize an underbody rinse — this is the part most people skip and the part that matters most
- 3Rinse wheel wells specifically, not just wheels
- 4Keep a sealant or coating on paint through winter so brine cannot cling
- 5Seal wheels — brake dust plus brine is the worst combination for wheel finishes
- 6Touch in stone chips before winter so brine has no bare metal to reach

Protection before the season
The best time to apply durable protection is late autumn. A coating or a good sealant applied in November survives the whole winter and makes the frequent washing you should be doing quick and safe.
Winter is also the right time to keep up maintenance visits, since interiors take salt and grit in on shoes and the carpet suffers.
